Course Description:
Dry Needling Level 1 (DN1): This introductory course outlines the history of dry needling, reviews current evidence and safety standards including OSHA blood-borne pathogens training, and emphasizes hands-on practice of safe dry needling techniques to commonly treated areas using the insertion of fine filament needles into muscular trigger points. Lumbar, cervical, lower quarter, and upper quarter muscles will be included for evaluation procedures, anatomy review with safety precautions/contraindications, and lab practice of dry needling techniques. Registrants must be a licensed physical therapist, osteopath, physician, or acupuncturist in their respective state within the U.S.
This course will be delivered over two 9 hour days of in-person content, and 9 hours of online pre-course content that must be completed prior to admission to the live lab dates. For successful course completion, participants must pass a written and practical exam component.
Course Objectives:
-
- Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- Describe the practice of dry needling and how to effectively use to improve pain and function-related outcomes for patients with neuromusculoskeletal pain
- Recall red and yellow flags, contraindications, and precautions related to dry needling practice.
- Recognize minor and major adverse events associated with dry needling and describe strategies to mitigate risks.
- Reflect upon implementation of dry needling with clinical case scenarios involving multiple neuromusculoskeletal presentations
- Demonstrate safe and effective performance of dry needling of commonly treated areas of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction in the lower and upper quarters, and cervicothoracic and lumbopelvic regions, using a patient-centered clinical reasoning framework
- Discuss dry needling and the scope of practice and advocacy issues within the learner’s state
- Summarize relevant components of thorough and defensible documentation to indicate safe and effective dry needling practices
